Where bluegrass comes from

Bluegrass takes its name from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, the Kentucky band that defined the sound in the 1940s. Country radio, folk radio and Nashville radio go further.

The sound of bluegrass

A bluegrass band is acoustic: banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and upright bass, often with a dobro. Earl Scruggs's three-finger banjo rolls and Bill Monroe's mandolin set the style in the 1940s, along with the close, high harmony singing known as the "high lonesome sound". Newgrass stretched it in the 1970s, Alison Krauss brought it to a wide audience, and the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack in 2000 sparked a revival. On the radio, bluegrass gospel and old-time string-band music share the airtime.
