Chile is a radio country: news stations that the whole nation trusts when the ground shakes, a Santiago FM dial crowded with hits, rock and romance, and regional stations from the Atacama desert to the south.

News radio: the stations Chile turns to

In a country of earthquakes and tsunami warnings, the news stations are not just background — they are the emergency channel, and many Chileans have a favourite they have trusted for decades.

• BioBio Chile (Radio Bío-Bío) — born in Concepción and now a national news network, among the most-voted Chilean stations in the directory; it also runs local stations such as Bío-Bío Valparaíso.
• Cooperativa — one of the country's most historic news stations, with a long reputation for independent reporting.
• ADN — news, talk and sport, with football at the centre.
• Duna — business news for Santiago, mixed with pop and classic rock.

Football commentary on the news stations is its own art form: fast, emotional and loud, especially when La Roja or the Santiago clubs are playing.

The Santiago FM dial

• Pudahuel — one of Santiago's most popular music stations, with Spanish-language hits and a big presenter culture.
• Corazón — romantic and tropical music: ballads, cumbia and bachata, the soundtrack of the micro and the kitchen.
• Imagina and Los 40 Chile — current hits and Latin pop.
• Rock & Pop — Chile's best-known rock station, and Futuro, for classic rock.
• Concierto — pop and rock from the 1980s onwards, much of it in English.
• Radio Carolina — pop and rock for a younger audience.
• Beethoven FM — classical music, relaunched and back in the directory.

Nostalgia is a format

The most-voted Chilean station in the directory is not a news network or a Santiago giant but La Retro 80s Chile, and Radio Definitiva from Tocopilla and Radio Retro Online do the same trick. The 1980s and 1990s — in English and in Spanish — are a huge format in Chile, and these stations play them without apology. The 80s radio guide has more.

The sounds that come from here

Cumbia chilena. Cumbia arrived from Colombia decades ago and became Chilean — the sound of every family party, and more recently of the nueva cumbia chilena bands. Tropical stations play it all day.

Cueca and Fiestas Patrias. The cueca is the national dance, and around the Fiestas Patrias on 18 and 19 September radio fills with it, alongside cumbia and the smell of fondas. If you are listening in September, you will hear it.

Nueva canción and Chilean rock. The songs of Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara still matter here, and Chilean rock — from Los Prisioneros onwards — has its own classic canon that the rock stations keep alive.

Rock and metal. Distorsión FM streams classic rock and metal at 256kbps, one of the higher bitrates in the Chilean directory.

The regions

Chile is more than four thousand kilometres long, and radio follows the map. Radio Sol in Antofagasta is one of the most-voted stations in the directory, Digital FM serves Concepción, Festival broadcasts from Viña del Mar, and community stations such as Radio Contexto Ñuble in Chillán serve their own towns. Radio María Chile carries Catholic programming nationwide.

How Chilean radio sounds

Chilean Spanish is fast and full of its own slang — cachai, po, al tiro — and radio is where you hear it at full speed. Morning shows on the big FM stations are built around teams of presenters who joke, argue and take calls, and the talk between songs is as much the product as the music. For Spanish learners that makes Chilean radio a challenge worth taking: once you can follow a Santiago morning show, most other Spanish will feel slow. For something gentler, the news bulletins on BioBio and Cooperativa are clearer and more measured, and the romantic stations talk less.

The dial changes through the day, too. Mornings belong to news and presenter-led shows, the afternoon commute brings the hits, and late at night the music stations slow down into ballads, rock classics and long, uninterrupted sets.

Listening from abroad

Chileans abroad — in Argentina, Spain, Sweden, the United States, Australia and elsewhere — use online radio to follow the news, the football and the Fiestas Patrias from home. Everything in the directory streams internationally in the ordinary way; if a particular broadcast, such as a football match, is restricted, that is the broadcaster's rights decision. Sound quality
