The sound of the island

Cretan music is played on the lyra, a bowed three-string fiddle, over the laouto, with mantinádes — rhyming couplets, often improvised — sung over the top. Nikos Xylouris set verses of Erotokritos to music and became the island's best-loved voice, and his brother Psarantonis carried the lyra into the 21st century. Greek radio, folk radio and world music radio go further.
