Many cumbias

Colombian cumbia travelled everywhere: Mexico made cumbia sonidera, Argentina cumbia villera, Peru chicha, and each is still on its local stations. Colombian radio, Peruvian radio and Argentine radio go further.

A little history

Cumbia began on Colombia's Caribbean coast, with the drums and gaita flutes of Afro-Colombian and Indigenous musicians. In the 1950s bandleaders such as Lucho Bermúdez took it into the ballrooms with brass and big-band arrangements, and records from Colombian labels such as Discos Fuentes carried it across Latin America.
