A little history

Día de Muertos, on 1 and 2 November, blends Indigenous traditions with the Catholic feasts of All Saints and All Souls, and is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Families build ofrendas for their dead and play the songs they loved; "La Llorona" is one of the songs most associated with the day, and mariachi — itself on UNESCO's list since 2011 — is its sound.
