The sounds that come from here

Merengue. The national music: fast, driven by accordion, tambora drum and güira scraper, and danced everywhere from weddings to nightclubs. UNESCO recognised it as intangible cultural heritage in 2016.

Bachata. Born in the countryside and the poor neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo, long looked down on, and now loved around the world — its guitar-led songs of heartbreak were recognised by UNESCO in 2019.

Dembow. The Dominican urbano beat, fast and relentless, which has spread from Santo Domingo's streets into Latin pop.

Salsa and ballads. Dominicans love salsa as much as anyone in the Caribbean, and romantic ballads have their own stations.
