How to Listen to Ghanaian Radio Online

Ghana has one of the liveliest radio cultures in Africa — morning shows that set the day's political argument, phone-ins in Twi and English, gospel on Sunday and highlife and hiplife the rest of the week.

How private radio arrived

For decades radio in Ghana meant the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. That changed in the mid-1990s. In 1994 an unlicensed station, Radio Eye, went on air in Accra and was shut down within weeks — but it forced the question, and in 1995 the government began licensing private stations. Joy FM, founded that year, was the first private station to be licensed, and the Accra dial filled up quickly after it.

The big Accra stations

• Joy FM — news, current affairs and music, and one of the most influential stations in the country.
• Citi FM — news, business and talk, and the most-voted Ghanaian station in the directory.
• Peace FM — news, politics and entertainment in Twi, with a huge audience.
• Adom FM and Asempa FM — Twi-language news, talk, sport and music.
• Hitz FM — the hits station, with plenty of Ghanaian music.

Several of these belong to the same group: Joy, Adom, Asempa, Hitz, Nhyira and Luv FM are all part of Multimedia Group.

Kumasi and beyond

Ghana's second city, Kumasi, is the heart of the Ashanti region and of Twi-language radio. Nhyira FM and Angel FM are from there, and Ahenfie FM plays highlife, hiplife and Afrobeats. From the Western Region, ChinaGhana FM in Tarkwa and the gospel station Parousia Radio are in the directory.

Languages

English is the official language, but much of Ghanaian radio is in Twi (Akan), and stations in Ga, Ewe, Dagbani and other languages serve their regions. A station's name often tells you: Adom and Asempa are Twi words.

The sounds that come from here

Highlife. Ghana's great popular music — bright guitar lines and brass over West African rhythms — took shape in the first half of the 20th century and spread across West Africa. It is still on the radio every day, and the Afrobeats guide traces what grew from it.

Hiplife. In the 1990s Ghanaian artists put rap over highlife and local rhythms; Reggie Rockstone is credited with the name, and the new private stations gave it airtime. Its descendants — Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif — fill the playlists today. SHATTA Movement radio streams Shatta Wale's music.

Gospel. Ghana has an enormous gospel scene, and stations such as Sunny FM and Parousia Radio play it with preaching and praise.

Talk. Morning shows on Joy, Citi and Peace set the day's political agenda, and phone-ins let the whole country join in.

Online and community stations

Some of the most-voted Ghanaian streams are online: Akomapa FM, Sweet Melodies, Adum Radio, and Ghana Music Radio at 192kbps. Oroko Radio is an independent community station from Accra with an eclectic, alternative mix.

Listening from abroad

Large Ghanaian communities live in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands, and radio from home is a daily habit for many of them. Expat radio covers it. Ghana keeps GMT all year, with no summer time — the same as London in winter and an hour behind in summer.

Sound quality
