Grunge — the heavy, raw guitar rock that came out of Seattle in the late 1980s and took over the world in the early 90s with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains — still has a devoted audience, and several stations play nothing else.

The story

Grunge grew up around Seattle's independent labels and clubs, with Sub Pop at its centre. Nirvana's Nevermind in 1991 took it into the mainstream almost overnight. After Kurt Cobain's death in 1994 the first chapter closed, but post-grunge bands carried the sound on through the rest of the decade. 90s radio online tells the wider story of the decade.
