For a small island, Jamaica has given the world an extraordinary amount of music — ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall — and its radio is where that music lives day to day, with the talk, jokes and news in between.

The stations

• Radio Jamaica 94FM (RJR) — on air since 9 July 1950, the country's oldest broadcaster, with news, talk and music.
• Irie FM — from Ocho Rios, the first all-reggae station in Jamaica, on air since August 1990, streaming at 320kbps.
• Fame 95FM — hits and entertainment.
• Zip 103 — dancehall and hip-hop.
• Kool 97 — classic hits and oldies.
• Mello Radio 88 — easy music.
• The Edge 105 and Fyah 105 — youth and dancehall.
• SunCity 104.9 and GGFM 90.1 — more of the dial, GGFM from Discovery Bay.
• Gospel FM Jamaica — gospel.
• Alpha Boys School Radio — from the Kingston school whose music programme trained members of the Skatalites, the band credited with creating ska. It is the most-voted Jamaican station in the directory.

The sounds that come from here

Ska. Fast, horn-driven, early-1960s dance music. The Skatalites' founding members came through the Alpha Boys' School.

Rocksteady. The slower, sweeter sound of the mid-1960s.

Reggae. From Bob Marley and the Wailers to today's roots artists, the music that carried Jamaica to the world. Irie FM plays nothing else.

Dub. Reggae stripped down and remixed with echo and space — the root of remix culture.

Dancehall. The fast, digital sound of the 1980s onward, and the soundtrack of Jamaican radio today.

Gospel. Jamaica has a large gospel scene, with stations of its own.
