The sound of the island

Madagascar's national instrument is the valiha, a tube zither made from bamboo; salegy, the fast dance music of the north, fills the radio, and hira gasy, an open-air show of music, dance and kabary speeches, keeps the oldest traditions alive. Malagasy and French are both spoken on air. African radio, French radio and world music radio go further.

Listening from abroad

Madagascar keeps East Africa Time, three hours ahead of UTC all year round.
