AM and news radio: where the country hears it first

When something happens — a typhoon, an earthquake, an election count — Filipinos turn on the radio. The news stations broadcast from before dawn, with commentators in the studio, reporters in the field and listeners calling in, and many of them also stream their studios as video.

FM: love songs, jokes and requests

Philippine FM has a style of its own. The mass-audience stations mix OPM hits and ballads with comedy segments, listeners' letters read on air, song requests and dedications, and presenters who talk to you like family.

• Barangay LS 97.1 — GMA Network's Manila FM station, close behind it.
• Love Radio — the Manila Broadcasting Company's hit network, with local stations in Dagupan, Lucena, Cebu, Davao and elsewhere.
• Win Radio and Wild FM — mass-audience hits for Manila and the provinces.
• MOR Entertainment — the ABS-CBN FM brand that carried on online after the network's stations went off the air in 2020.
• Home Radio and Easy Rock — the gentler, adult-contemporary side of the dial, for offices and long drives.

OPM and the sounds that come from here

OPM. Original Pilipino Music — ballads, pop and band rock, in Filipino and English — is the heart of the local dial. Tunog Pinoy Power FM plays it all day, and 90s Pinoy Alternative stays with the band boom of the 1990s, the era of Eraserheads and Rivermaya.

Pinoy hip-hop. Filipino rap has a large, loyal audience, from the Francis M generation to the rappers who fill streaming charts now. Pinoy Rap Radio streams it around the clock, and the hip-hop radio guide goes wider.

Budots. The minimal, hypnotic dance music from Davao, made for street dancing and viral videos, has stations of its own — Budots FM among them.

Religious radio. In a largely Catholic country, Radio Maria Philippines and other Catholic and Christian stations carry Mass, the rosary and talk, and they are part of the day for many listeners.

Christmas starts in September

The Philippines is known for having the world's longest Christmas season. Once the "-ber" months begin, carols start creeping onto the radio, and by December they are everywhere. The regional dial

Metro Manila is only part of the story. In the Visayas and Mindanao, radio speaks Cebuano (Bisaya), Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and other regional languages, and the local news station is often the most trusted voice in the province. Cebu has an FM scene of its own, with 96.3 WRocK and Easy Rock Cebu among the most-voted stations, and Iloilo, Bacolod, Davao and Dagupan all have stations in the directory. Boracay Beach Radio, with its smooth, easy music, is the one that sounds most like a holiday.

Listening from abroad

Millions of Filipinos live and work abroad — in the Gulf, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and at sea — and radio from home is part of how they stay close. Overseas Filipino workers listen to the morning news from their home province, or to Manila FM's love-song requests late at night. Everything in the directory streams internationally in the ordinary way; if a particular broadcast is restricted, that is the broadcaster's decision. Expat radio is about exactly this.

Sound quality

Philippine streams vary widely. Some regional news stations stream at 24kbps, which is fine for speech on a weak mobile connection, while music stations such as Tunog Pinoy Power FM and Boracay Beach Radio stream at 128kbps and 90s Pinoy Alternative at 192kbps.
