The sound of the region

Pernambuco is the home of frevo and maracatu, the rhythms of carnival in Recife and Olinda, and Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, was born in Exu in the state's sertão. In the 1990s Recife's manguebeat movement, led by Chico Science & Nação Zumbi and Mundo Livre S/A, mixed maracatu with rock and hip-hop. Brazilian radio, Salvador radio and world music radio go further.

Listening from elsewhere

Recife keeps Brasília time — three hours behind UTC all year, with no daylight saving; Pernambuco's Fernando de Noronha islands are two hours behind UTC.
