Raiz and universitário

Sertanejo raiz, played on the ten-string viola caipira, grew out of rural São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goiás; sertanejo universitário, its polished modern form, fills stadiums and tops Brazil's charts. Brazilian radio, São Paulo radio and country radio go further.

A little history

Sertanejo reached records in 1929, when Cornélio Pires paid to press the first recordings of caipira music from rural São Paulo. From the 1980s duos such as Chitãozinho & Xororó and Leandro & Leonardo took it to the top of the Brazilian charts, and the duo remains the genre's classic format.
