Talk radio is the half of the dial that music streaming never replaced. Nobody builds a playlist of phone-ins. Open the talk genre page on 72FM, choose a station and press play — no download, no account — and you are listening to a country think out loud.

The international broadcasters

Some of the most-listened-to talk stations in the world exist to be heard outside their own country.

• BBC World Service is the most-voted talk station in the public directory by a wide margin: English-language news, analysis and documentary, broadcast for a global audience.
• RFE/RL's Radio Farda broadcasts in Persian, and Radio Martí broadcasts to Cuba — both funded by governments to reach listeners abroad, and both worth knowing exist when you read about how radio crosses borders.

These stations stream everywhere, which is the point of them.

National news and current affairs

• LBC (United Kingdom) — the best-known phone-in station in Britain, where callers and presenters argue about the day's politics.
• NPR 24 Hour Program Stream (United States) — the public radio news service as a continuous stream.
• France Inter (France), WDR 5 (Germany), Cadena SER (Spain) and Radio 24 (Italy) — the news and talk networks people in those countries actually have on.
• Vesti FM and Radio Mayak (Russia), CFRB News/Talk 1010 (Toronto) and Caracol Radio (Colombia) — the same format, in their own languages and arguments.

A country's talk station tells you more about it in ten minutes than its music station does in an hour: what is assumed, what is contested, what makes a presenter laugh.

Sport on the radio

Sport talk is its own category and a big one: Radio Marca in Spain, RMC Info Talk Sport in France, Radio Manà Manà Sport in Rome. Live commentary is often restricted outside the broadcaster's own country for rights reasons — the talk around the match usually is not. Phone-ins, and why they travel

A phone-in is unscripted, local and specific. Listening to one from another country is the closest thing radio has to eavesdropping honestly: the callers are ordinary people, the complaints are ordinary complaints, and the host is doing the difficult work of keeping it moving. Even in a language you half-know, it teaches you the register people actually speak in.

Talk radio for language learners

Speech radio is the most useful listening practice there is, because it is unhurried, repetitive in structure — news at the hour, weather, the same programme names each day — and pitched at native listeners rather than at learners. News bulletins are the clearest entry point; phone-ins are the deep end. Pick a country from the countries directory and start with its public broadcaster.

Listening around the clock

Sound quality, and why it matters less here

Talk streams are often 32 to 64kbps — the BBC World Service stream in the directory is 56kbps — and for speech that is genuinely enough. Talk radio and podcasts are not the same thing
