Where tango comes from

Tango was born in the late nineteenth century in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, on both banks of the Río de la Plata, and UNESCO added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Buenos Aires radio, Argentine radio and Uruguayan radio go further.

The golden age and after

The recordings most tango stations play come from the golden age, roughly 1935 to 1955, when orchestras led by Juan D'Arienzo, Carlos Di Sarli, Osvaldo Pugliese and Aníbal Troilo filled the dance halls of Buenos Aires. Carlos Gardel, who died in 1935, was its great singer. Astor Piazzolla's nuevo tango brought in jazz and classical ideas from the 1950s onwards. Dance-focused stations follow the order of a milonga — sets of three or four tracks called tandas, separated by a short non-tango "cortina" — and mix in milonga and vals, tango's two faster cousins.
