How to Listen to Ukrainian Radio Online

The public directory lists several hundred Ukrainian stations, from the public broadcaster and independent news radio to rock networks streaming at the highest quality in the region.

News and public radio

Radio has mattered more in Ukraine in recent years than in most of Europe, and the news stations are where to start.

• Suspilne, the public broadcaster, runs Ukrainian Radio (news and national programming), Radio Promin (music and entertainment) and Radio Kultura (arts and culture).
• Hromadske Radio is an independent, listener-supported news and talk station, built on long-form interviews and analysis rather than headlines. It streams at 192kbps, better than many music stations.
• Radio NV is news and politics from one of Ukraine's major media groups, and one of the most-voted Ukrainian stations in the public directory.

For listeners outside the country, these stations are the most direct way to hear Ukrainian news as Ukrainians hear it, in Ukrainian and without an intermediary.

The music networks

The most popular Ukrainian stations in the directory are commercial music networks, and several run multiple themed streams online.

• Hit FM — contemporary hits and, on its themed streams, the biggest hits of past decades. It is the most-voted Ukrainian station in the directory.
• Lux FM and Kiss FM — pop and dance, with Kiss FM running separate streams for Ukrainian music and deep electronic sets.
• Radio ROKS — rock, with themed streams for ballads and for hard and heavy rock, broadcasting online at 320kbps. If sound quality matters to you, this is some of the best-sounding radio in Eastern Europe.
• Melodia FM, Nashe Radio and Radio Maximum — easy listening, Ukrainian and international pop and rock respectively.

Why Ukrainian radio sounds Ukrainian now

Language quotas introduced in 2016, and strengthened since, require a substantial share of songs and presenting on air to be in Ukrainian. The effect is audible: a wave of Ukrainian-language pop, rock and electronic music that fills the playlists where Russian-language hits once dominated, and a generation of artists who built careers on it. Stations that began life with Russian-language names and formats have largely moved over.

Listening to Ukrainian radio today is one of the easiest ways to hear that shift — contemporary Ukrainian music, on air, in context.

Regional and international services

Suspilne also runs regional stations in cities across the country, carrying local news and voices alongside the national schedule — the place to go if you want to hear Lviv, Kharkiv or Odesa rather than the capital.

Radio Ukraine International is the public broadcaster's foreign-language service, with programming in English and several other languages. For someone following Ukraine from abroad without speaking Ukrainian, it is the most direct route to the country's own reporting; for someone learning the language, it is a useful bridge between the two.

When a stream goes quiet

Ukrainian broadcasters have kept on air through difficult conditions, and streams can occasionally drop out — a server moves, a transmitter site loses power, a network reorganises its feeds. If a station you know is silent, try the same network's other streams first: several of the music networks run more than one. The directory hides stations whose streams have stopped answering, so what you see listed is what was working when the page was built.

Listening from abroad

Millions of Ukrainians now live in Poland, Germany, Czechia, the United Kingdom, Canada and elsewhere. Online radio is how many keep home in the background: the news in their own language, the stations they grew up with, the new music their friends are hearing. Sound quality

Most Ukrainian music stations stream at 128kbps, which is fine on a phone or laptop. The rock streams at 320kbps and the 192kbps news stations reward better headphones or speakers.
