The sound of Uzbekistan

Shashmaqam — the "six maqams", the classical suites of Bukhara and Samarkand shared with Tajikistan — is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Uzbek pop grew out of it: Yulduz Usmonova became one of the country's biggest stars, and Sevara Nazarkhan took the doira frame drum and the dutar lute to world music stages. In Kyrgyzstan the three-string komuz is the national instrument. Further east, Mongolian radio has the steppe's throat singing. Kazakh radio, Russian radio and Turkish radio go further.

Listening from abroad

Uzbekistan keeps Tashkent time, five hours ahead of UTC all year round; Kyrgyzstan is six hours ahead.
