A little history

Zouk was born in Guadeloupe and Martinique at the start of the 1980s, when the band Kassav' mixed gwoka and bèlè drums with synthesisers and horns; its slower form, zouk love, spread to Africa, where Angola's kizomba grew from it. Kompa — konpa — is Haiti's national dance music, created by the bandleader Nemours Jean-Baptiste in the 1950s, and the two styles have borrowed from each other ever since.
