How to Listen to Austrian Radio Online

You can stream Austrian radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM's Austria page, choose a station and press play. Austria's dial is dominated by its public broadcaster, ORF, and it offers some of the best-quality streams in Europe — a classical and culture channel without adverts, an English-and-German alternative station, and the country's biggest hits station.

ORF: the public broadcaster

ORF runs three national stations and nine regional ones:

• Ö1 — culture, classical music, science and debate, without advertising. Its high-quality stream runs at 192kbps.
• Hitradio Ö3 — pop and chart hits from the 1980s to today, and by far Austria's most listened-to station.
• FM4 — launched in January 1995, a youth and alternative station that broadcasts in both German and English, with a reputation well beyond Austria.
• The regional stations — Radio Wien, Radio Niederösterreich and the other seven regional channels, with local news and easy music for each state.

ORF also broadcasts ORF Slovenski spored, a Slovene-language service for Carinthia's Slovene minority.

Private radio

Private radio came late to Austria. KroneHit, launched in Vienna in 2001, received the first nationwide private licence in 2004 and is the biggest private station. Others in the directory:

The sounds that come from here

Classical music. Vienna was home to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and the Strauss family, and Ö1 keeps the tradition at the centre of its schedule.

Austropop. Austrian pop in German and in dialect — Falco, Rainhard Fendrich, STS and their successors — and today's Austrian artists, whom Lounge.FM plays exclusively.

Alternative and electronic. FM4 is where Austria hears new music first, and Vienna's electronic scene has a long history.

Listening from abroad

Austria keeps Central European time, one hour ahead of UTC in winter and two in summer. Austrians abroad — in Germany, Switzerland and beyond — use online radio to keep up with home. Expat radio covers the habit.
