Children's radio is one of the quietest good ideas in the house: songs, stories and short features made for children, with no screen, no autoplay and nothing to scroll. Open 72FM's kids stations in any browser, press play, and it runs in the room like radio always did.

The stations worth knowing

• Fun Kids (United Kingdom) — the national children's station, with music, stories and features for primary-school ages.
• Rai Radio Kids (Italy) — the Italian public broadcaster's children's service, streaming at 256kbps.

Most are free to listen to in the ordinary way; commercial children's stations carry adverts like any other commercial station, which is worth knowing before you leave one running.

Why radio suits children

Nothing to look at. The whole point. Audio fills a room while children draw, build, eat or wind down, and it does not pull attention the way a screen does.

Nothing to choose. A station plays what it plays. That removes the negotiation over the next video and the endless re-watching of the same one.
