"The best radio station in the world" has no answer, but it has a very good proxy: the stations that millions of listeners in the open Radio Browser directory — the database behind 72FM — keep choosing and voting for. This is that list, read by kind rather than by rank, with the caveats that make it honest.

How to read a vote count

Votes accumulate over years, so an old station with a loyal audience outranks a brilliant new one. Some broadcasters submit several streams of the same station, splitting their votes. And a vote is a click of approval, not a measure of how many people listen. Treat the ranking as a map of enthusiasm, not a chart of audience.

• REYFM #original (Germany) — a young online station built around its own community.
• Radio Paradise (United States) — listener-supported and commercial-free, famous for its eclectic mixing, and streaming at 320kbps.
• Classic Vinyl HD (United States) — pre-1970s pop, big band and crooners at 320kbps; oldies radio online covers its world.
• Adroit Jazz Underground (United States) — serious, adventurous jazz; the jazz radio guide goes further.

• BBC World Service (United Kingdom) — the most-voted news station in the directory.
• France Info, France Inter and France Culture — Radio France's news, general and culture networks, all near the top.
• RFI Afrique and RFI Monde — French international radio, with a very large African audience.

A country's most-voted station is often a better introduction than its most famous one:

What the list leaves out

Votes favour stations with international audiences and online communities. The biggest stations in India, Nigeria, Indonesia or Brazil — heard by tens of millions on FM — can rank far lower in an online directory than their audience suggests.
