Christian radio is one of the largest formats on the dial anywhere in the world, and one of the most varied: a contemporary worship station and a Latin-chant Catholic station have almost nothing in common except the faith behind them. The main kinds of Christian station

Contemporary Christian music (CCM) and worship. Modern songs written for congregational singing and for the car, the largest slice of the format in English. WALM HD is among the most-voted Christian streams in the public directory, at 320kbps.

Hymns, choral and sacred classical. The older repertoire — hymnody, choirs, organ, sacred choral works. WALM 2 HD pairs hymns with classical music, and public classical stations carry much of the same repertoire; classical radio online covers those.

Catholic radio. The Radio Maria network broadcasts in dozens of countries — Italy, Spain, Togo, Rwanda, Guatemala, Peru and many more — with Mass, the rosary, teaching and talk in each country's language. Its stations turn up on almost every country page in the directory.

Teaching and talk. Preaching, Bible study, call-in counselling and Christian news. In much of the United States and Africa this is the larger half of the format.

Gospel. The Black American tradition and its descendants are a world of their own, and gospel radio online is the guide to it.

Christian radio is not an English-language format

The missionary stations that built shortwave

Christian broadcasters were among the first to see radio as a way to cross borders. HCJB began broadcasting from Quito on Christmas Day 1931 and sent programmes in many languages far beyond Ecuador for decades; it still streams today, and Ecuadorian radio online tells the rest of that story. Much of what is now internet radio was shortwave first, for exactly the same reason: reaching people the local dial could not.

Christmas

Christian stations carry the season harder than anyone. Christmas Vinyl HD is one of the most-voted streams in the whole directory during the season, and dedicated Christmas stations appear in every country from late autumn. Christmas and holiday radio covers them.

Listening with the family

Christian stations are the most reliably family-safe listening in the directory: no profanity, no explicit content, and the talk is generally gentle even when it is serious. Family-friendly radio has more on the general problem of one room, several ages.

Sound quality
