Rumba and soukous

Congolese rumba, which both Congos added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2021, grew in the bars of 1950s Kinshasa from Cuban records and local guitar; Franco and TPOK Jazz, Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide and Fally Ipupa carried it and its faster offspring, soukous, across Africa. Lingala is the language of the music and of Kinshasa; Swahili is spoken in the east. To the north-west, Cameroonian radio dances to makossa and bikutsi. African radio, French radio and Belgian radio go further.

Listening from abroad

Kinshasa keeps West Africa Time, an hour ahead of UTC; the east, from Lubumbashi to Goma and Bukavu, is two hours ahead.
