The sound

Crooning was born with the electric microphone: in the late 1920s and 30s Bing Crosby showed that a singer no longer had to fill a hall, and could sing softly, as if to one listener. Frank Sinatra came out of Tommy Dorsey's band in the 1940s and made the Great American Songbook his own, and Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett followed; Michael Bublé carried it into this century. Big band and swing radio, jazz radio and oldies radio go further.
