You can stream Cuban radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM's Cuba page, choose a station and press play. Cuba has one of the oldest radio traditions in the Americas and one of the richest musical ones — son, salsa, bolero, trova and timba — and online radio lets you hear both from anywhere.

The national stations

Radio in Cuba is run by the state, and several of its best-known stations are in the directory:

• Radio Progreso — founded in December 1929, one of the oldest stations on the island, with music, soap operas and entertainment under the slogan La Onda de la Alegría.
• Radio Reloj — on air since July 1947, with one of the most distinctive formats anywhere: news read in one-minute segments over a constant ticking clock, with the time announced every minute.
• Radio Rebelde — founded in February 1958 in the Sierra Maestra mountains as the radio station of Fidel Castro's rebel movement, and now a national station with news, sport and music.
• Radio Habana Cuba — the international service, broadcasting in several languages.

Music stations

The sounds that come from here

Son. The foundation of so much Latin music — guitar, tres, bongos and clave — and the root of salsa. The Buena Vista Social Club recordings brought its older generation to the world in the 1990s.

Bolero. Slow, romantic songs that spread from Cuba across Latin America.

Trova. Cuba's singer-songwriter tradition, from the old trova to the nueva trova of the 1960s and 70s.

Timba and Cuban reggaeton. The high-energy dance music of 1990s Havana, and today's urban sound.

Guajira and punto. The music of the countryside, which Radio Campesina keeps on the air.

Listening from abroad

Large Cuban communities live in the United States — Miami above all — and in Spain and Mexico. Cuba keeps Eastern time with summer time, the same clock as Miami and New York most of the year. Expat radio covers the habit.
