Doo-wop — the close vocal harmony of 1950s street-corner groups, with a bass voice underneath, a soaring falsetto on top and nonsense syllables in between — gave early rock and roll some of its most beautiful records, and a few stations play nothing else.

The sound

Doo-wop grew up on the street corners, stairwells and school halls of American cities — New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago — where groups of teenagers sang without instruments, because voices were free. The harmonies stood in for the band: a bass singer for the rhythm, backing voices going "doo-wop" and "sh-boom", and a lead who could break your heart. The Platters, the Drifters, the Flamingos, the Penguins, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and Dion and the Belmonts took the sound onto the radio and into the charts.
