You can listen to Motown radio online in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM, search for "Motown", and press play. The Detroit label that Berry Gordy founded in 1959 made some of the best-loved pop music ever recorded — the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Four Tops, the Jackson 5 — and there are stations that play little else.

Motown and Stax

Motown's sound was polished, melodic and made for pop radio; down in Memphis, Stax Records made grittier, horn-driven soul with Otis Redding and Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Many soul stations play both, and the contrast is half the pleasure. Soul radio covers the wider tradition, and oldies radio the pop of the era.
