The story

Emo began in the mid-1980s in the Washington DC hardcore scene, when bands such as Rites of Spring turned punk's intensity inward. In the 1990s the Midwest scene made it quieter and more intricate; in the 2000s bands such as Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Paramore took it into the mainstream.

Pop-punk put punk's speed together with big choruses. Green Day's Dookie in 1994 made it huge, and Blink-182 and many others followed. Both styles returned in the 2020s with a new generation of artists and a nostalgic older one.
