News and talk

• Emisoras Unidas — news, talk and sport from Guatemala City, and by a wide margin the most-voted Guatemalan station in the directory.

The sounds that come from here

Marimba. The marimba is Guatemala's national instrument, and marimba music — at weddings, in town squares and on the radio — is the country's most recognisable sound. Traditional programmes on regional stations keep it on the air.

Regional Mexican music. Banda, grupera, norteño and ranchera cross the border in both directions, and stations such as Radio 107 Éxito and Estéreo Alegre play them all day.

Cumbia, merengue and reggaeton. Tropical and urban music fill the hits stations, as they do across Central America.

Christian music. Guatemala has one of the largest evangelical populations in Latin America, and Christian radio is a big part of the dial. Radio Cultural TGN, one of the oldest Christian stations in Central America, Rhema Stereo and Radio Actitud play worship music and preaching, and Radio María and Emaús Radio carry Catholic programming.

Radio in Mayan languages

Guatemala recognises twenty-two Mayan languages, among them K'iche', Q'eqchi', Kaqchikel and Mam, and for millions of people Spanish is a second language. Community stations in the highlands broadcast news, music and public information in those languages, and religious broadcasters do too — the directory includes a station reading the Bible in K'iche'. Stereo 100 and Radio ESLA in Quetzaltenango, the country's second city, are a good way into highland radio.

Football

The rivalry between Comunicaciones and Municipal, the two Guatemala City giants, is the clásico that stops the country, and the sports shows on Emisoras Unidas and La Red live on it. Whether a particular match streams outside Guatemala is the broadcaster's rights decision.

Listening from abroad

Millions of Guatemalans live in the United States — in Los Angeles, Houston, New York and across the country — and radio from home is how many of them follow the news, the football and the music.
