How to Listen to Hong Kong Radio Online

You can stream Hong Kong radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM's Hong Kong page, choose a station and press play. Hong Kong's dial is small and old — public radio began in 1928 — and it broadcasts mostly in Cantonese, with English and Mandarin channels alongside.

RTHK: public radio since 1928

The government's first station, known as GOW, went on air on 20 June 1928; its successor, RTHK (Radio Television Hong Kong), is the city's public broadcaster and runs a family of channels, all streaming online:

• RTHK Radio 1 — news, current affairs and phone-ins in Cantonese, and the most-voted Hong Kong station in the directory.
• RTHK Radio 2 — Cantonese pop and entertainment.
• RTHK Radio 3 — the English-language channel.
• RTHK Radio 4 — classical music and the arts.
• RTHK Radio 5 — culture, education and programmes for older listeners, in Cantonese.
• RTHK Putonghua — the Mandarin channel.

RTHK also relays two mainland stations on its Radio 6 and Radio 8 frequencies.

Commercial radio

Hong Kong has two commercial broadcasters. Commercial Radio Hong Kong, founded in 1959, runs two Cantonese FM channels and an English AM channel, and Metro Broadcast, formed in 1991, runs finance, entertainment and English-language channels. Neither is among the most-voted streams in the directory, so search for them by name.

The sounds that come from here

Cantopop. Hong Kong's pop music — sung in Cantonese, born from film and TV theme songs and at its height in the 1980s and 1990s — is the backbone of Radio 2 and the commercial FM channels, and its classics fill the oldies stations.

Cantonese talk. Phone-in programmes and current-affairs talk in Cantonese are a daily habit, and Radio 1's morning programmes are among the most listened to in the city.

Classical music. RTHK Radio 4 is one of Asia's best-known classical music channels.

Cantonese, English and Mandarin

Cantonese is the language of most Hong Kong radio. RTHK Radio 3 and the commercial English channels broadcast in English, and RTHK Putonghua in Mandarin. The Chinese radio guide covers Mandarin radio from the mainland, Taiwan and elsewhere.

Hong Kong communities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States use online radio to keep up with home. Hong Kong keeps UTC+8 all year, with no summer time — so its morning programmes go out in the late evening or small hours in Europe, and the previous afternoon on America's west coast.
