What you hear depends on which stream you choose, because NPR is not one station — it is a national news organisation and a network of hundreds of local member stations, and the difference matters.
NPR and its member stations
NPR produces national programmes — news, interviews, culture — and licenses them to independent, locally run public radio stations across the United States. Those member stations decide their own schedules, mix NPR programmes with shows from other producers, and add their own local news. So "listening to NPR" usually means listening to a member station, which sounds different in Columbus, San Francisco or Chapel Hill.
The streams you can play
NPR 24 Hour Program Stream. The national service as a continuous stream — the most-voted NPR stream in the public directory, and the simplest way to hear NPR's journalism without picking a city.
NPR Newscast. The short hourly news bulletin, on its own.
Member stations. The directory includes many of them, among them WOSU 89.7 (Columbus, Ohio), KQED 88.5 (San Francisco), WUNC 91.5 (North Carolina), Connecticut Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Radio. Choose one for a place's local news alongside the national programmes — or for the specialist music that many member stations run on their second channel, such as WUKY's rock and folk stream in Kentucky.
Why pick a member station
- Local news and weather you will not get from the national stream.
- Different schedules. The same national programme airs at different times in different time zones, so a West Coast station can give you the morning news in the European evening.
- Music. Many member stations run classical, jazz or eclectic music streams that have nothing to do with news.

Supporting the station you listen to
Member stations are funded largely by their own listeners, plus underwriting and grants. In 2025 the US Congress rescinded federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which passed money on to local public stations, so listener support now matters even more to many of them. If you listen to one regularly, its own website is where to support it. 72FM does not collect donations for any station.
NPR for English learners
