Nicaragua's dial runs from Managua's music and talk stations to regional and community radio, with marimba and son nica, Caribbean Palo de Mayo and plenty of tropical music.

The sounds that come from here

Son nica. A distinctly Nicaraguan style created by the composer Camilo Zapata, originally played on the marimba de arco with guitar and a small four-string guitar. It is the sound of Nicaraguan folk music.

Marimba. The marimba is at the heart of traditional music in the Pacific region, especially around Masaya.

Palo de Mayo. The Afro-Nicaraguan festival music of Bluefields and the Caribbean coast, related to calypso and soca, with topical, humorous lyrics — celebrated every May.

Tropical and romantic music. Cumbia, bachata, salsa and ballads fill the FM dial.

Listening from abroad
