Honduran radio has a long history — the oldest station has been on air since 1933 — and today it mixes news and talk from Tegucigalpa with tropical music, pop and the Garífuna sound of the Caribbean coast.

The historic stations

• HRN La Voz de Honduras — on air since November 1933, the country's first commercial station and its oldest, with news and current affairs. It is the most-voted Honduran station in the directory.
• Radio América — on air since December 1948, with news, talk and sport.

The sounds that come from here

Punta. The music and dance of the Garífuna people of the Caribbean coast — fast drums, call-and-response singing, hips in motion — and the sound most people outside Honduras associate with the country. UNESCO recognised Garífuna language, dance and music in 2001.

Punta rock. The modern, electric version of punta, which filled dance floors across Central America.

Tropical and Latin pop. Cumbia, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and ballads fill the FM dial, as across the region.

Football. Football is a national passion, and commentary on the big Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula clubs is a radio tradition. Whether a match streams abroad depends on the broadcaster's rights.

Listening from abroad
