Phonk — dark, distorted beats built on samples of 1990s Memphis rap, heavy cowbells and pitched-down vocals — grew from SoundCloud into one of the internet's biggest underground sounds, and in its "drift phonk" form it is everywhere in car videos and games.

Where it comes from

Phonk's roots are in the cassette-era rap of 1990s Memphis — lo-fi, menacing and full of eerie samples — and in Houston's slowed-down sound. In the 2010s producers on SoundCloud rebuilt that sound with modern production, and later the faster, bass-heavy drift phonk took off through car-culture videos and short-form video apps.
