How to Listen to Radio on an Amazon Fire Tablet or Fire TV

Amazon's Fire tablets and Fire TV devices do not come with Google's app store or Chrome, which is where most "how to play radio" advice starts. They do come with everything needed to stream live radio — a browser, Alexa and the Amazon Appstore — and this guide covers each route, including the one that needs no app at all.

On a Fire tablet

The browser: Silk

Every Fire tablet ships with Silk, Amazon's own browser, built on Chromium — the same engine as Chrome. Web radio players work in it the way they do in Chrome:

1. Open Silk and go to 72fm.com.
2. Find a station by country, genre or search, and press play.
3. Bookmark it, or use Silk's menu to add the page to your home screen if your version offers it, so the radio is one tap away next time.

No account and no download are needed, and the free player gives you an hour of listening a day.

If the sound stops when the screen turns off: browsers on Fire OS, like browsers on other Android-based tablets, can pause a tab that is no longer on screen, especially when battery saving or low memory kicks in. Keep Silk in the foreground, lengthen the screen timeout in Settings → Display, or leave the tablet on its charger while you listen. Alexa on the tablet

Fire tablets have Alexa built in, and on many models Show Mode turns a charging tablet into a smart display. Asking Alexa to play a station works for stations available through the radio services Alexa supports in your country; smaller and international stations are often missing. Apps from the Amazon Appstore

The Amazon Appstore has several radio apps. They can keep playing in the background more aggressively than a browser tab, which is their main advantage for long listening. Before installing one, check what it asks for — many free radio apps are funded by adverts and tracking — and whether the stations you care about are in its catalogue.

On Fire TV

Silk on the TV

Silk is available on Fire TV devices too — preinstalled on many, and free from the Appstore on the rest. Since Firefox for Fire TV was discontinued, it is the main browser on the platform.

1. Open Silk from your apps, or say "Alexa, open Silk".
2. Go to 72fm.com — typing with the remote is slow, so do it once and bookmark the page.
3. Use the remote's cursor to choose a station and press play.

The sound comes through your TV or soundbar, which is often the best speaker in the house. Leave Silk open while you listen: switching to another app can pause the page.

Sending audio from your phone

Many Fire TV models can mirror an Android phone's screen (look for Display Mirroring in the Fire TV settings), so you can play a station on your phone and hear it through the TV. If your TV or soundbar has Bluetooth, pairing your phone with the soundbar directly is often simpler and keeps the TV screen off. Playing radio through your TV or hi-fi covers the other ways.

On an Echo Show

Echo Show smart displays also include Silk. Open it, go to 72fm.com and play a station on the screen in the kitchen — handy when the station you want is not one Alexa can find by voice.

• A station Alexa knows, hands-free: ask Alexa.
• Any station in the directory, no app, no account: Silk.
• Hours of listening with the screen off: an app from the Appstore, chosen carefully.
• The best sound in the living room: Silk on Fire TV, or Bluetooth from your phone to the soundbar.
