The radio app your phone needs is already installed. Every internet station is a stream a browser can play, so Safari or Chrome will do it — no download, no account, no permissions to grant.
What follows is the part nobody explains: keeping it playing with the screen off, what it costs in data and battery, how it behaves in the car, and the four reasons a stream refuses to start on a phone when it works fine on a laptop.
Start in five seconds

Keeping it playing with the screen off
This is the question people actually have, and the answer is yes on both platforms.
Once audio is playing, locking the phone does not stop it. The station appears on the lock screen with play and pause controls, because the player publishes its metadata through the Media Session API — the same mechanism your headphones' pause button uses. On Android the notification shade shows the same controls; on iPhone they appear on the lock screen and in Control Centre.
Three things do stop playback, and none of them is a bug:
- Closing the tab or the installed app. Backgrounding is fine; closing is closing.
- The phone reclaiming memory. After a long spell in the background with many other apps open, iOS in particular will discard a tab. Reopening and tapping play resumes in a second.
- Losing the network mid-stream. A stream is a live connection, not a download; when the signal drops it has to reconnect.
What it costs in data
The bitrate decides, not the app or the phone:

An hour a day at 128kbps is under two gigabytes a month. The same hour at 320kbps is four and a half. On a metered plan, pick lower-bitrate stations when you are out — through a phone speaker or cheap earbuds the difference is inaudible. iOS Low Data Mode and Android's Data Saver do not degrade a radio stream the way they compress video; they simply stop background refreshes. What it costs in battery
Less than you would guess, and almost none of it is the audio. Decoding a stream is cheap; the screen is expensive. Lock the phone and an hour of radio costs a few percent. Two habits help:
- Turn the screen off rather than leaving the player visible. Playback continues.
- Prefer the speaker or wired headphones for long sessions. Bluetooth is a small constant drain, not a large one, but it adds up over an afternoon.
Bitrate makes almost no difference to battery — the radio chip is doing the work either way, and the difference between 128 and 320kbps is a rounding error next to the screen.
In the car
Bluetooth from the phone to the car stereo works with any web player, and it is what most people already do: pair once, press play, the car handles the rest. What a web player cannot do is appear in CarPlay or Android Auto — those require a native app, and a browser-based player is not one. Falling asleep to it

When a stream will not start on a phone
- Nothing happens on the first tap. Mobile browsers refuse to start audio without a deliberate gesture. One tap on play is the gesture; an autoplaying player is what the rule exists to prevent.
- The player looks like it is playing but there is no sound. On an iPhone, check the ring/silent switch: Safari respects it for web audio in situations where a native app would not. Then check the volume rocker while audio is playing, since phones keep separate volumes for ringer and media.
- It plays on wifi and not on mobile data. Some carriers block unusual ports, and some stations only publish an insecure address that a secure page cannot load. Try another station; if that works, the first one is the problem.
- It says the station is unavailable in your country. That is the broadcaster's licensing, and no player overrides it: stations not available in your country.
Browser or app?
A native radio app can do three things a web player cannot: appear in CarPlay and Android Auto, download nothing but keep a background service alive more aggressively, and send you notifications. Everything else — the catalogue, the sound, the favourites, the sleep timer — is identical, and a web player asks for no install, no account, no location and no contacts. For most people that trade is worth it; if you drive for a living, it is not.
