How to Listen to Radio on Xbox and PlayStation

A games console is often connected to the best screen and speakers in the house, so it's a reasonable place to put the radio on — and plenty of players want music under a game. The two consoles handle it very differently: Xbox has a proper web browser, PlayStation 5 does not.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: use Microsoft Edge

Current Xbox consoles come with Microsoft Edge, the same browser as on a Windows PC.

1. Open Microsoft Edge from My games & apps.
2. Go to 72fm.com and pin it to your favourites — typing with a controller is slow.
3. Choose a station and press play.

A wireless keyboard plugged into the console's USB port makes searching much faster.

Radio under a game: a browser is not built to play in the background while a game runs, so don't rely on Edge for that. The Spotify app on Xbox does support background playback, including its podcasts and playlists; for live radio stations under a game, the dependable route is a phone or tablet playing into your headphones or a separate speaker.

PlayStation 5: no browser, so cast or use Spotify

PS5 has no web browser for general use, so a web player can't run on it directly. The options:

• Spotify on PlayStation plays in the background while you play, through the console or your headset — but it isn't live radio.
• A phone or tablet playing a station on 72FM through a Bluetooth speaker or headphones is the simplest way to have live radio alongside a game.
• Your TV. If the PS5 is plugged into a smart TV, the TV itself may play radio — radio on a smart TV covers each platform.

The older PS4 does have a built-in Internet Browser app, which can open 72fm.com, though it is slow by modern standards.

Nintendo Switch

The Switch has no web browser for general use and no music-streaming apps of note, so it isn't a practical radio. Use a phone alongside it instead.

Balancing radio and game audio

If the radio is coming from a phone while the game plays through the TV, you'll be balancing two volumes. Most players find it easiest to turn the game's music down in its audio settings and keep the effects, letting the radio take the place of the soundtrack.
