How to Listen to Radio on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG, Roku and Google TV

The television is often the best speaker in the house — or it is connected to the best one, a soundbar. Getting live radio onto it depends almost entirely on which platform your TV runs, because each one handles browsers, casting and apps differently. This guide goes platform by platform.

Samsung (Tizen)

Most Samsung smart TVs include a browser called Internet, found through the Home or Smart Hub button.

1. Open Internet from the apps row.
2. Go to 72fm.com and bookmark it — typing with the remote is slow.
3. Choose a station with the remote's cursor and press play.

Samsung does not offer Chrome or Firefox for its TVs, so the built-in browser is the one to use. If you have an iPhone, most Samsung TVs from 2018 onwards also support AirPlay 2: play a station on your phone and send the sound to the TV from the AirPlay menu.

LG (webOS)

LG ships a Web Browser app on its webOS TVs, available from the Home screen.

1. Open Web Browser.
2. Go to 72fm.com, bookmark it, and press play on a station.

Many LG TVs from 2018 onwards (webOS 4.0 and later) support AirPlay 2 as well, so an iPhone or Mac can send a station to the TV directly.

Roku

Roku devices and Roku TVs do not have a web browser, so a browser-based player cannot run on the TV itself. Two routes work instead:

• AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad or Mac — supported on many recent Roku devices.
• Screen mirroring from an Android phone or a Windows PC, on Roku devices that support it.

Play the station on your phone or computer, then send it to the Roku. Radio channels are also available in the Roku Channel Store, with the usual trade-off: only the stations each channel carries.

Google TV and Android TV

TVs and streamers running Google TV or Android TV usually have Chromecast built in, which is the easiest route of all:

• From a laptop: open 72fm.com in Chrome, choose Cast from Chrome's menu, and cast the tab to the TV.
• From an Android phone: use the phone's Cast or screen-casting option to send the screen to the TV.

These TVs do not normally come with a browser for the TV itself, so casting is the usual way in.

Amazon Fire TV

Fire TV has its own browser, Silk. Radio on Fire tablet and Fire TV covers it step by step.

Keeping the radio playing

• Auto power off. Many TVs switch themselves off after a few hours without a button press, to save energy. For a long listening session, look for an auto power off or eco setting and lengthen it.
• Screen off, sound on. Some TVs let you turn the picture off while audio keeps playing, in the picture, eco or accessibility settings. It saves power and keeps a bright screen out of a dark room.
• Stay on the page. Switching to another app can pause a browser page. Leave the browser open while you listen.
• Casting depends on the sender. When you cast or mirror from a phone or laptop, that device has to stay awake and connected.

Better sound through the TV

TV speakers are built for dialogue and effects; a soundbar or a pair of powered speakers connected to the TV makes music sound much fuller.
