Where reggaeton comes from

Reggaeton took shape in Puerto Rico in the 1990s, out of Panamanian reggae en español and Jamaican dancehall, and went global in the 2000s. Medellín later became a second capital of the sound. Latin radio, Puerto Rican radio and Colombian radio go further.

The sound

Reggaeton's heartbeat is the dembow rhythm, named after Shabba Ranks's 1990 dancehall song "Dem Bow" — a steady kick with a syncopated snare that you will recognise within a bar. Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" (2004) carried it around the world; Don Omar, Wisin & Yandel and Tego Calderón defined the first big wave; J Balvin, Maluma and Karol G made Medellín a second centre; and Bad Bunny turned it into the most-streamed sound on the planet. On the radio you will also hear its relatives: Dominican dembow, which is faster and rawer, and Latin trap, which slows everything down.
