The sound of the island

Catania gave the world the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini, and the singer-songwriters Franco Battiato and Carmen Consoli both came from the Catania area. In the late 1970s Peppino Impastato, from Cinisi near Palermo, used his free radio station, Radio Aut, to denounce the local Mafia. Italian radio, Rome radio and opera radio go further.

Listening from elsewhere

Sicily keeps Italian time — one hour ahead of UTC in winter and two in summer.
