Squeezebox Internet Radio After mysqueezebox.com: How to Keep Listening
Published

Logitech closed its mysqueezebox.com service on 19 March 2024, after announcing it in January. Squeezebox players, the Squeezebox Radio, Touch, Boom and the rest, had used it for much of what they did online, including their radio menus. They still work, but only through a server of your own on the home network: Lyrion Music Server, the new name of Logitech Media Server. With it running, internet radio comes back.
What changed
- mysqueezebox.com is gone. A player can no longer sign in to it, and the services that depended on it stopped. Logitech's notice named TIDAL, Pandora and Deezer as the main losses.
- A local server is now required. Every Squeezebox has to be connected to a Lyrion Music Server running on a computer, NAS or small single-board computer in the house.
- TuneIn radio carries on. Logitech said radio stations through TuneIn stay available with the server at version 8.4 or later, and owners have confirmed TuneIn still plays after signing out of mysqueezebox.com.
Step 1: run Lyrion Music Server
Install Lyrion Music Server on a machine that stays on: an always-on computer, a NAS, or a Raspberry Pi. Lyrion is free and open source. On a Raspberry Pi, piCorePlayer is a popular free system that can run the server. Then point each Squeezebox at that server in its network settings.
Step 2: add any station by its stream address
TuneIn covers many stations, but not all, and some owners would rather play a station's own stream. Lyrion plays a station from its stream address and keeps it in Favorites, so it appears in the player's menu like any other station:
- In Lyrion's standard web page: open Radio, choose Tune In URL, paste the address and play it, then save it to Favorites. Favorites can also take a new entry directly from their edit view.
- In the Material skin (your server's address followed by :9000/material): open Favorites and use the heart with a plus sign to add a new one.
A station's stream address is the direct link to its live audio, not its website. The radio stream URL finder gives you the address the open Radio Browser directory lists for any station in it: type the station's name and copy it. How to find a station's stream URL explains what to look for.
Step 3: more radio through plugins
Lyrion's settings include a list of plugins, several of them radio sources. They are written by the community, so what is on offer changes over time; check the list on your own server.
If you would rather not run a server
A Squeezebox without a server cannot reach internet radio by itself any more. If keeping a computer on is not for you, a Wi-Fi radio with its own station list is the simpler road: Wi-Fi internet radios covers what to look for, and many accept your own stream addresses too. Other brands lost their radio menus the same way, see vTuner not working and Bose SoundTouch after the cloud shutdown.
