Listening to UK Radio from Abroad: What Works and What Is Blocked

British radio travels better than most people expect. Open 72FM's United Kingdom page, choose a station and press play — no download, no account. Some of what you remember from home will play anywhere in the world; a specific and predictable part of it will not, and this guide is about which is which.

What plays anywhere

• BBC World Service — the BBC's international news and talk service, made to be heard outside Britain, and the most-voted UK station in the public directory.
• Classic FM, LBC, Heart (including its 70s, 80s, 90s and Dance streams), Capital, Smooth, Smooth Chill and Gold — the big commercial networks, all in the directory.
• Radio Caroline, the former offshore station, and independents such as Jazz London Radio and the TMM alternative streams.

Between them that covers news, talk, classical, easy listening, dance and the decade stations — most of what a British listener abroad actually misses.

What is usually blocked

The BBC's domestic networks — Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 4, 6 Music and the rest — are licensed for listeners in the United Kingdom, and BBC Sounds restricts most of them outside it. Live sport is the other common case: match commentary is bought territory by territory, so a station that plays fine all week can go quiet at kick-off.

What to listen to instead

Listening at the right hour

The UK is behind or ahead of most of the world, so the breakfast show you want is rarely on at breakfast where you are. 72FM's by-the-clock view sorts stations by the local time where they broadcast, which makes it easy to catch a London morning at your own midday or midnight.

Data, bitrates and long listening
