The sound of Zimbabwe

The mbira, the thumb piano at the heart of Shona music, was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2020, shared with Malawi. Thomas Mapfumo built chimurenga music on it, Oliver Mtukudzi became the country's best-loved voice, and sungura and Zimdancehall fill the airwaves today. Zambian radio, South African radio and African radio go further.
