Alexa Won't Play a Radio Station? How Alexa Finds Radio, and What to Do

"Alexa, play Radio Paradise" works beautifully — until it doesn't, and the speaker plays the wrong station, says it cannot find it, or goes silent. The reasons are almost always the same handful, and they all come from one fact: Alexa does not search the internet for radio. This guide explains how it actually finds a station, why it fails, and the fallback that works with any station at all.

How Alexa finds a radio station

When you ask for a station, Alexa passes the request to a radio provider — most commonly TuneIn or iHeartRadio, with others depending on your country and device. The provider looks the name up in its own catalogue and returns a stream. If the station is not in that provider's catalogue, or the provider cannot stream it where you are, Alexa has nothing to play.

Which provider is used by default is set in the Alexa app's music settings, and you can always name one in the request:

• "Alexa, play station name on TuneIn."
• "Alexa, play station name on iHeartRadio."

Why Alexa won't play a station

It is not in the provider's catalogue. TuneIn and iHeartRadio carry many stations, but not every one — small community stations, internet-only stations and many international ones are missing. Try the other provider by name; if neither has it, Alexa cannot play it by voice.

The station is restricted in your country. Some broadcasters only stream to their home country, for rights reasons. BBC domestic networks are the best-known example: outside the United Kingdom they are restricted whatever device you use. Alexa heard a different station. Station names are short, similar and full of numbers. Add the frequency, the city or the call sign: "Alexa, play Capital FM London on TuneIn", "Alexa, play WNYC 93.9 on TuneIn".

The skill is not enabled or not linked. Providers other than the default usually need their skill enabled in the Alexa app, and some need an account linked. A half-finished link fails quietly.

Your Amazon account's country does not match where you are. Alexa's catalogue follows the country set on your Amazon account. If you have moved, the stations offered can be the ones for the country you left.

The provider is having a bad day. Streams and catalogues break. If a station played yesterday and not today, try the other provider, then try again later.

The fallback that always works: Bluetooth

Every Echo speaker is also a Bluetooth speaker. Play any station on your phone and send the sound to the Echo:

1. Say "Alexa, pair" — the Echo becomes discoverable.
2. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings and choose the Echo.
3. Open 72FM in the phone's browser and press play on any station.

This works with every station in the directory, including the ones no voice service carries, because Alexa is only playing the sound, not finding the station. After the first time, "Alexa, connect my phone" reconnects it. Radio on a smart speaker covers Bluetooth and casting on other speakers too.

On an Echo Show

Why 72FM has no Alexa skill

A voice skill has to be built, certified and maintained for each platform, and a voice request still needs a catalogue to search. 72FM is a web player over the public directory, so the honest route to an Echo is Bluetooth or the Echo Show's browser — both of which play every station we list, not just the ones a voice provider carries.
