How to Listen to Kannada Radio Online

You can stream Kannada radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM, search for "Kannada" or a station's name, and press play. Kannada is the language of Karnataka, in southern India, and its radio runs from All India Radio's Bengaluru stations to commercial FM and online stations playing Kannada film songs all day.

All India Radio in Karnataka

The public broadcaster is still at the centre of Kannada radio. In the directory you will find:

• AIR Bangalore and Akashvani Karnataka — news, talk and programmes in Kannada.
• Vividh Bharati Bengaluru and Vividh Bharati Kannada — AIR's popular music service, with film songs and requests.
• FM Rainbow Bangalore and FM Rainbow Kannada — AIR's FM entertainment channels.
• Amruthavarshini — AIR's classical music channel from Bengaluru.

The sounds that come from here

Kannada film music. The Kannada film industry, based in Bengaluru and often called Sandalwood, produces most of the songs on Kannada radio, and online stations play little else.

Carnatic music. Karnataka has a central place in South Indian classical music — the composer Purandara Dasa, from the region, is often called the father of Carnatic music — and AIR's classical channels keep it on the air.

Folk and devotional songs. Bhavageethe (light poetry set to music), folk songs and devotional music have their own programmes on AIR and their own online stations.

Listening from abroad

Kannada speakers abroad — in the United States, the Gulf, the United Kingdom and Australia — use online radio to keep up with home. Expat radio covers it. India is 5½ hours ahead of UTC, so Bengaluru's morning shows go out in the early hours in Europe.

Sound quality

AIR's streams are often 32kbps, fine for speech and acceptable for music on a phone; most online Kannada stations stream at 128kbps. Some do not report a bitrate at all. Radio audio quality and bitrate explains the numbers.
