Hindi film songs are among the most-played music on earth, and online radio has more of them than any one person could hear — stations for the new hits, for the 90s, for a single singer, and for the old songs your parents knew by heart.

Why film songs are the radio

In Hindi cinema the songs are part of the film, sung by playback singers while the actors mime, and they reach the radio long before the film reaches cinemas. That is why "Bollywood music" and "Hindi pop" mean almost the same thing: most of India's popular music comes from the films.

Radio made that happen. In the 1950s, Radio Ceylon, broadcasting from Colombo, drew huge audiences across India with Hindi film songs and the weekly countdown Binaca Geetmala, presented by Ameen Sayani. All India Radio answered on 3 October 1957 with Vividh Bharati, its own film-music service — still on the air and still in the directory. The Sri Lankan radio guide tells the Radio Ceylon side.

The stations everyone knows

• Radio Mirchi — India's best-known private FM brand, with Radio Mirchi Hindi and the Mirchi Top 20 countdown both among the most-voted Hindi stations in the directory, plus Mirchi Love for romantic songs.
• Vividh Bharati — All India Radio's film-music service since 1957.
• Fnf.Fm Hindi — the most-voted Hindi station in the whole directory.

By era

• The golden age. The 1950s to the 1970s — the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. Hindi Retro, Madhur Sangeet Radio and the stations in the next section play them.

One singer, all day

Some of the most-voted Hindi stations are devoted to a single voice: Hits Of Lata Mangeshkar, Hits Of Mohammed Rafi and Rafi hit songs, Goldy Mukesh, and streams for Kishore Kumar and Shreya Ghoshal. They are run by fans rather than broadcasters, so they come and go more often than the big stations; if one has stopped, another usually has the same idea.

Devotional music

Hindi radio also has a large devotional side. The 2B! Radio Sangam family streams mantras and bhajans around the clock, with separate stations for Krishna, Shri Ram, Shiva, Ganesha and Devi Maa — together some of the most-voted Indian stations in the directory.

Bollywood outside India

Hindi film songs are loved far beyond India. BBC Asian Network in the UK plays them alongside bhangra and British Asian pop; Hum FM 106.2 in Karachi plays Bollywood in Pakistan; HJ94.1 Boom FM and NTN Radio in Guyana, and Ujala Radio in Amsterdam, play them for the Indo-Caribbean and Surinamese communities; Radio Mirchi Bay Area serves California; and Suno FM and Tinder Radio broadcast from the Gulf. Sound quality

Most Bollywood streams are 128kbps, which sounds good for music. 1.FM Bombay Beats and Radio Udaan stream at 256kbps; a few, such as Fnf.Fm, at 64kbps, which is fine on a phone. India is 5½ hours ahead of UTC, so Indian breakfast shows go out in the middle of the night in Europe — but music stations do not mind what time you listen.
