How to Listen to Pakistani Radio Online

You can stream Pakistani radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM's Pakistan page, choose a station and press play. Pakistan's radio history begins with the country itself — the announcement of independence was made on the radio at midnight in August 1947 — and today it spans the public broadcaster's regional stations, busy commercial FM in the big cities, and music from qawwali to Coke Studio.

Radio Pakistan

The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation — Radio Pakistan — runs a national network of regional stations, many on medium wave, each serving its province in its own languages.

• Radio Pakistan Lahore, Islamabad, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and Hyderabad are all in the directory, carrying news and programming in Urdu alongside Punjabi, Saraiki, Pashto, Balochi and Sindhi.
• FM 101 and FM 93 are the corporation's FM networks, with music and entertainment in the major cities.
• Radio Pakistan World Service broadcasts to listeners abroad.

Commercial FM

• FM 100 Pakistan — one of the country's first private FM networks, with stations in Karachi, Islamabad, Hyderabad, Abbottabad and other cities, and the most-voted Pakistani station in the directory.
• Samaa FM 107.4 — news and talk from the Samaa group.
• Hot FM 105 — entertainment, talk and sport.
• City FM 89 — music in English and Urdu.
• Hum FM 106.2 — music, including Bollywood, from the Hum network.
• Mera FM 107.4 — music and entertainment in Urdu.

The sounds that come from here

Qawwali. The devotional music of the Sufi shrines, carried to the world by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is one of Pakistan's great gifts to music, and it is never far from the dial.

Ghazal and film songs. The ghazal singing of Mehdi Hassan and the film songs of Noor Jehan and the Lollywood golden age still have a huge audience. Radio Pak Filmi streams Pakistani film music around the clock.

Coke Studio and modern Pakistani pop. Coke Studio Pakistan, which set folk, Sufi and pop singers side by side, became one of the most-watched music series in South Asia, and its songs are all over the FM stations. Pakistani pop and rock have their own long history, from Vital Signs and Junoon onwards.

Regional music. Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi and Balochi folk music each have their own audience, and Radio Pakistan's regional stations are where they are heard most.

Radio through the year

In Ramadan, stations build their schedules around sehri before dawn and iftar at sunset, with recitation, naats and religious programming. Cricket on the radio is a long national habit, and commentary still pulls in listeners who cannot get to a television. Whether a particular match streams outside Pakistan is the broadcaster's rights decision.

Listening from abroad

Pakistanis abroad — in the United Kingdom, the Gulf, the United States and Canada, and elsewhere — listen online for the news, the cricket and the music of home. Everything in the directory streams internationally in the ordinary way; expat radio covers this habit.

Sound quality

Pakistani streams vary widely. FM 100's streams run at a low 32kbps, fine for talk on a phone but thin for music, while Radio Pak Filmi, FM 101 and FM 93 stream at 128kbps. Check each station card for the bitrate; radio audio quality and bitrate explains what the numbers mean.
