How to Listen to Punjabi Radio Online

You can stream Punjabi radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM, search for "Punjabi" or a station's name, and press play. Punjabi is spoken on both sides of the India–Pakistan border and by one of the world's most visible diasporas, so Punjabi radio comes from Lahore and Jalandhar, but also from Vancouver, Toronto, Birmingham, Melbourne and Chicago. Punjab in India

• All India Radio Punjabi — the public broadcaster's Punjabi service, and the most-voted Punjabi station in the directory. News, farm programmes, folk music and talk, in the Punjabi of the Indian state. There is also an FM AIR Punjabi stream.
• Online stations — Bol Punjabi Radio, Radio Risham Punjabi, Mohabbat Radio Punjabi, Radio Punjabi Virsa and others play Punjabi music around the clock.

Punjab in Pakistan

Most Punjabi speakers live in Pakistan, where the province of Punjab includes Lahore, the country's second city. Urdu dominates the national airwaves, but Punjabi runs through the local ones.

• Radio Pakistan Lahore and Multan — the public broadcaster's stations in the province, with Punjabi and Saraiki programming alongside Urdu.
• FM 100 Pakistan — with stations in Gujrat and Jhelum, among others, both in Punjab.
• Mera FM 107.4 in Lahore.

Gurbani and kirtan

For Sikh listeners, some of the most important Punjabi radio is devotional. Live Kirtan Sri Harmandir Sahib streams the kirtan (sung hymns) from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and Hazur Sahib Live from the gurdwara at Nanded. Sikhnet Radio, Gurbani Kirtan, Jap Radio and Khalsa FM in Alberta carry recorded and live kirtan and Gurbani around the clock.

The diaspora dial

Punjabi is one of the most spoken languages in Canada after English and French, and Punjabi communities in Britain, the United States and Australia have built a radio scene of their own — often more polished than the stations back home.

• Canada — Red FM in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, and East FM 102.7 in Toronto, broadcast in many languages with a large share of Punjabi and other South Asian programming. MyRadio 580am serves Calgary and Edmonton.
• United Kingdom — BritAsia Radio Punjabi streams at 320kbps, and Radio Central 24 from the West Midlands plays bhangra, Bollywood and desi music.

The sounds that come from here

Bhangra. Born as a harvest dance in Punjab and reinvented in 1980s Britain as dancefloor music, bhangra is the sound most people outside South Asia know. The UK stations still play plenty of it.

Punjabi pop. Punjabi music is one of the most popular in India, and artists such as Diljit Dosanjh, AP Dhillon and Karan Aujla have taken it to stadiums and charts far beyond Punjab. Much of it is made in Canada as much as in India.

Folk. Boliyan, heer and the other folk forms, and the tumbi and dhol that go with them, are what AIR Punjabi and Radio Pakistan's regional stations keep on the air.

Sufi music. Qawwali and Sufi poetry — Bulleh Shah and Waris Shah wrote in Punjabi — belong to both Punjabs.

Sound quality and the right hour

The public stations are often 32kbps, fine for speech; BritAsia Radio Punjabi streams at 320kbps and the Golden Temple kirtan at 96kbps. Many online stations do not report a bitrate at all. Mind the time difference, too: India is 5½ hours ahead of UTC and Pakistan 5 — so the Golden Temple's early-morning kirtan is late evening in North America.
