How to Listen to Scottish Radio Online

You can stream Scottish radio live in any browser, with no download and no account: open 72FM, search for a station by name, and press play. Scotland's dial has a national BBC station of its own, a Gaelic service, big commercial stations in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a lot of small local and community radio — from the Borders to Shetland — that sounds like nowhere else in Britain.

The BBC in Scotland

• BBC Radio Scotland — the national station: news, phone-ins, sport, comedy and a strong run of music programmes, including traditional and folk music you will rarely hear on UK-wide radio. It is the most-voted Scottish station in the directory.
• BBC Radio nan Gàidheal — the BBC's Scottish Gaelic station, with news, conversation and Gaelic music. For anyone learning the language, it is the best daily listening there is.

In July 2025 the BBC made the BBC Sounds app and website UK-only. The directory lists the BBC's own streams for both stations; whether a given programme plays outside the UK is the BBC's decision, and live football in particular is often restricted. Commercial radio

• Clyde 1 (Glasgow), Forth 1 (Edinburgh) and MFR (the Highlands) — long-running local hit-music stations, each with its own breakfast show and local news.
• Greatest Hits Radio — in 2023 the old "2" stations, such as Clyde 2 and Forth 2, became Greatest Hits Radio, playing songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s with local news for each area.
• Capital Scotland and Smooth Scotland — Scottish versions of the UK networks.
• Nation Radio Scotland — hits across Scotland from a Scottish-owned network.

Local and community radio

Scotland's small stations are where its accents and places come through.

• SIBC in Shetland, and 60 North Radio, also from Shetland — an eclectic station that streams in lossless FLAC.
• Radio Skye and Cuillin FM on the Isle of Skye.
• Celtic Music Radio, from Glasgow — traditional and contemporary Scottish and Celtic music, folk and roots.
• EHFM in Edinburgh and Shmu FM in Aberdeen — community stations with volunteer presenters and specialist shows.

The sounds that come from here

Traditional music. Fiddles, pipes, accordion bands and Gaelic song have a living tradition in Scotland, not a museum one — Celtic Music Radio and BBC Radio Scotland's music programmes are the place to hear it. The folk radio guide goes further.

Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic is spoken by a small community, mostly in the Highlands and Islands, and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal is its daily radio.

Scottish bands. From Glasgow's indie scene outwards, Scotland produces far more music than its size suggests, and local and community stations play it first.

Football and phone-ins. Scottish football, and arguing about it on the radio afterwards, is a national habit. Match commentary is the most likely thing to be blocked outside the UK.

Listening from abroad

Scots live all over the world — in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States above all — and a Scottish station is a quick way to hear home. The commercial and community stations in the directory generally play internationally; the BBC is the one to check. Sound quality

Streams vary widely: Smooth Scotland and Nation Radio Scotland stream at 48kbps AAC+, fine on a phone; Clyde 1 and Forth 1 offer higher-quality versions; SIBC and EHFM stream at 192kbps, and 60 North Radio's FLAC stream is as good as internet radio gets, though it uses far more data.
