Shortwave is the radio that crosses oceans. Signals bounce off the ionosphere and come down thousands of kilometres away, which is why international broadcasters, missionaries, pirates and hobbyists built a whole world on it. You no longer need a receiver to hear that world — though for the real thing, you still want one.

What shortwave is

Shortwave frequencies — roughly 3 to 30 MHz — reflect off layers of the upper atmosphere, so a single transmitter can reach another continent, especially at night. The price is quality: reception fades, drifts and crackles with the weather in the sky, and the sound is AM-grade at best. For much of the twentieth century it was how governments spoke to other countries' populations, and how many people heard news their own broadcasters would not carry.

Where shortwave went

Over the past two decades many of the big international broadcasters cut or ended their shortwave services and moved to the internet, satellite and local FM partners. The programmes did not disappear; the transmitters did. Much of what once went out on shortwave now streams, and that is the easy way to hear it — BBC World Service, RFI, and the government-funded international services all sit near the top of the directory. Listening to their streams gives you the programming without the atmosphere — clearer, but not quite the same experience.

Real shortwave, through a browser: web SDRs

This is the part most people have never heard of. Hobbyists around the world connect real shortwave receivers to the internet using software-defined radio, and let anyone tune them from a browser. WebSDR receivers (the University of Twente's in the Netherlands is the best known) and the worldwide KiwiSDR network let you choose a receiver somewhere else on the planet, pick a frequency and hear exactly what its antenna hears — fading, interference and all.

It is the closest thing to owning a shortwave set, and it is free. It is also a different activity from station listening: you tune, you search, you wait for the band to open. Hobbyists call it DXing.

Owning a receiver

If the searching appeals, a portable shortwave radio is inexpensive and works anywhere, with no internet at all — which is exactly why emergency planners still recommend one. Look for:

  • SSB (single sideband) if you want to hear amateur radio and utility transmissions, not just broadcasters.
  • Synchronous detection for cleaner reception of weak stations.
  • A socket for an external antenna — a length of wire out of a window makes a larger difference than any feature list.
